Soviet/Russian jets have long been a part of military aviation, and it looks like they will remain so. Let's take a look at some of the best Russian fighters produced by the old Soviet machine.

The arms race that resulted in Cold War tensions between the US and NATO versus the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact created an environment where fighter jets were used for PR wars as much as actual combat.

When designing fighter jets, Russian aviation experts were always concerned with what the US and its allies were doing and how best to counter them. This led to a lot of military spending on the part of both nations.

They argued that increased US military spending (now ironically facing its own financial deficit) helped accelerate the economic collapse of the Soviet Union as it tried to catch up.

Much of this military spending went to fighter jets, especially those produced by the two companies that dominated Soviet aviation, continue to lead Russian avionics and account for our entire list, the Sukhoi and the MiG.

The dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 slowed military exports, including fighter jets. Russia has revived its aerospace industry, but is a big seller in China and former Soviet nations while building one of the strongest air forces in the world.

The Su-24 was first introduced to the Soviet Air Force in 1974 and was designed as a supersonic aircraft that could be used in all weather conditions. It has a twin-engine, variable-sweep wing design as well as a dual-seat arrangement (with side-by-side seating) for two pilots.

It saw much combat use during its lifetime, with notable engagements being used on the Soviet side in the Soviet-Afghan War as well as on the Russian side in the First Chechen War.

It has been in service with the Russian Air Force since 1991, as have other former Soviet air forces, including those of Ukraine and Azerbaijan. It is eventually slated to be phased out entirely in favor of another Sukhoi aircraft, the Su-35.

A follow-up to the Su-24, the Su-25 offers much of the same with some improvements. The fighter was first presented to the Soviet Air Force as a prototype in 1975, received tests in 1978 in Tbilisi, and entered active service in 1981.

Like its predecessor, the Su-25 has seen its fair share of active use. It was used extensively during the Soviet-Afghan War, triggering more than a hundred missile strikes. It was also used on the Iraqi side in the Iran-Iraq War, where they were very effective and only lost one craft.

In the 1990s, the Iraqi Air Force again used the Su-25 against coalition forces during the Gulf War. Meanwhile, Russia used the Su-25 in hundreds of engagements against Chechen separatists in the 90s and 00s during the First and Second Chechen Wars.

First introduced in 1985, this entry in the Su series of fighters was sold in China, where it was licensed and developed into the Shenyang J-11, which has been in service since 1999.

Ukraine also inherited the Su-27 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, they did not choose to modernize the craft for modern use and the craft largely retired.

Russia, meanwhile, continued to use the craft regularly. It was deployed during a conflict with Georgia in 1992. Russia used an upgraded version of the craft, the Su-27SM3, in its military intervention in the Syrian civil war.

This offering from Sukhoi was developed in the late 1980s during the final years of the Soviet Union and eventually entered service after the dissolution of the Soviet Union as part of the Russian Air Force.

In 1997, a variant, the Su-30MKK was produced for use by the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force. Another variant, the Su-MKM, was produced for Malaysia, while another, the Su-30KI, was developed for use by the US Air Force.

Russia continued to use the Su-30 in active military use, particularly in 2015 during its aforementioned intervention in the Syrian civil war, conducting strikes to aid Bashar al-Assad.

This craft first flew as a prototype in 1990, just a year before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the separation of which led to a long delay in their development. The Su-34 made its debut in the Russian Air Force in 2014.

This is another craft that was used on the Syrian/Russian side of the Syrian Civil War. He was also employed against ISIS and reports on strikes in the Hama region.

Unlike the Su-27, the Su-24 has not seen as many operations by foreign units. However, Algeria has recently been rumored to have become the first foreign buyer and operator of the Su-34, although this has not been confirmed.

Another example of a late-80s fighter developed by Sukhoi during the final years of the Soviet Union, this fourth-generation aircraft was first used in 2014, more than 15 years after it was first designed.

Like other Su fighters, the Su-35 was used in active combat during Russia's involvement in the Syrian civil war. The Russian Air Force currently stations several Su-35s at the Khmeimim air base in Syria.

Despite its development delays, the Su-35 has continued to be exported to various air forces around the world, with Algeria, Indonesia and China all ordering it.

Old rivalries die hard, and the US and Russia remain in a military arms race, and the development of fifth-generation fighters is a key front in this competition.

Our latest Sukhoi fighter jet is intended to be Russia's answer to the United States Air Force's fifth-generation aircraft, the Su-57 will be the first Russian aircraft with stealth capabilities. It will also present a lot of speed and maneuverability.

We now move to another big name in Russian avionics, the Mikoyan MiG. According to the theme of the competition between the USA and the Soviet Union / Russia, the MiG-29 was originally developed in the late 70s and was introduced in 1982 as a counterpart to the F-16 America.

These Soviet fighter planes were primarily designed with air superiority in mind. However, the Soviet Air Force adapted them for use as multi-role fighters that could also be used for military strikes.

Ukraine inherited dozens of MiG-29s after the breakup of the Soviet Union and used them against Russian separatists during the ongoing war in Donbass, where some Ukrainian MiG-29s were shot down in combat.

The MiG-31, first introduced in 1981, is likely to be one of the longest-running fighter jets in the world due to the fact that the Russian military has stated that it intends to remain in service into the 2030s.

The MiG-31 boasts several superlatives, including reports that it is among the fastest fighters in the world as well as one of the only ones capable of firing air-to-air missiles.

Unlike the other MiG aircraft on this list, the MiG-31 has not seen much export. Kazakhstan is the only other military confirmed to use them. Syria tried to buy them in the past, but socio-economic and political factors have reportedly caused these sales to stall.

One of the latest additions to the Russian Air Force arsenal, the MiG-35 was first unveiled in 2007 at the Aero India Air Show, and entered active service in 2019.

Both a single and a two-seat version are used. The MiG-25 is seen as a major improvement over the MiG-31, with its precision targeting of particular interest. In addition, it is compatible with AESA radar.

The MiG-35 is a twin-engine fighter powered by two FADEC RD-33MK engines. Due to its recent age, it has not seen combat or been exported for use by other countries, although Egypt has shown interest in the past.

Let's finish our look at Russian fighter jets with a real blast from the past. It was first introduced in 1952 and has had an extensive operational history in the Soviet, Chinese and perhaps most notably Vietnamese air forces.

The Vietnam War saw some of the MiG-17s used in combat most famously, with those flown by North Vietnamese forces against the US Air Force in engagements throughout the war.
