usmc pistol qual

Usmc Pistol Qual - Taking a firearms course is a great way to test your skills. Pistol skills are among the easiest skills you can copy on your own. Skill experience, typically conducted at distances of 25 meters or less, can be simulated in most facilities.

As a former Marine, I bought the M9 pistol known as the Entry Level Pistol Program or ELP. The ELP was adopted by the USMC with the introduction of the M9 service rifle in the mid-1980s (Lamothe, 2013). When firing at a target affixed to an "e" silhouette, the qualification course at the end of the ELP fired the shooter with the pistol in a low ready position and included a slow rate of fire.

7 yards – rapid execution (1 shot in 3 seconds, pistol pointed down at a 45-degree angle, unholstered) 5 of these, each shot a pair.

7 yards – quick reaction drills (2 shots in 5 seconds, pistol unholstered, pointing down 45 degrees) for a total of eight shots, 4 of which.

15 yards – reload/continuous fire (3 shots from first clip, 3 shots from second clip, all in 20 seconds), two of which for a total of 12 shots.

While the ELP capability has some advantages - for the modern pistol shooter, the use of the low ready position, no holster, and slow fire indicates an old trajectory that needs updating.

"Since 1992, the Marine Corps has been committed to improving marksmanship training. Each attempt has been met with friction due to time or financial constraints. A renewed effort that began in 2008 and led to the newly approved Combat Weapons Program (CPP) in 2013".

The CPP uses a new silhouette target (MPMS) and is designed to train Marines to "use their weapons against a common threat" (USMC Training Command). Unlike ELP, Marines firing CPP start from the holster or tactical payload (what most shooters refer to as high-ready or CQB-ready).

While the CPP refers to the entire program used to train Marines with the pistol, this post will primarily focus on the skill chart on the last day of the course. The CPP qualification course is shown in the table below.

When you compare CPP with ELP, you will notice a new and more modern fire channel. Additionally, you'll notice a focus on controlled doubles, reload speed, and use of the vault.

Unlike most qualification courses that appear in the law enforcement community, the CPP goal has a number of scoring rings (above), making this goal harder than most. It also promotes accuracy, something Marine Corps emphasize in all their marksmanship training.

Marines attending the EOTG Urban Sniper Course shoot specific targets as students shoot at targets at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC, December 4, 2014. Pistol skills are required to clear rooms and shoot at close range. After the students fire the pistol, they research and evaluate the area and make sure the environment is safe. In the spirit of the CPP (or reliving my past), I grabbed my M9 and headed for range to fire on the Marines CPP. I used Winchester 147-grain JHP and Safariland ALS paddle covers. I didn't want to expose the portable turn pointer system, so I used Brownells' PACT Club Timer III to keep track of equal times.

A few weeks later I went back and shot it with a Glock 19 and did a little better:

Next time you're on stage, give CPP a try, I think you'll like it. MPMS targets are available from a variety of sources online, they come from Law Enforcement Targets.
