Its advantages include a very accurate smooth-shooting trigger and an easy-to-carry slide. Col. Ben reviews this great value concealed carry pistol and examines its pros and cons to help you decide if it's right for you. He uses his 10 criteria, looks at the gun's features and specs, and gives his personal opinions and preferences to help you decide on this gun for yourself.

Walther Arms' CCP M2 (CCP - Concealed Carry Pistol) (M2 - model with American-style magazine release button) is being promoted as a striker-fired semi-automatic pistol with a good trigger and ergonomics that is a great value. Some say the trigger and ergonomics are now the best for a striker-fired pistol. In the past, I've reviewed the full-size 5-inch, 4-inch, and 3.5-inch PPQ M2 models and liked them so much that I bought and used them all. I find that they really have an excellent trigger that is smooth and soft with a short reset. And the grip, robust cylinder, and overall ergonomics all work well for me. But is the Walther a great value with similar features that might cost less and can be used for concealed carry? Well, I found a great value Walther CCP M2 in 3.54, so I had to test and evaluate to see if it shares close features with the more expensive model and if it works for concealed carry. Mainly, is it accurate and reliable, and will it handle a variety of different rounds?

I know this improved CCP M2 model is piston and gas delayed, but I want to know the specifics of what that means and see if it makes any difference when shooting the gun. Basically, a normal straight recoil 9mm has standard recoil, but what about the CCP M2 felt recoil with a gas delayed recoil pistol system?

Best Compact 9mm Pistol: The Perfect Ccws?

Walther's piston system is called "SoftCoil" which is expected to reduce recoil with the piston, delayed gas blow, and a lighter recoil spring while also making it easier to slide the gun into the rack. Of course, this appeals to new shooters, those more sensitive to recoil, and those with medical conditions or poor grip strength.

The Walther CCP M2's gas-delayed system uses a fixed barrel and gas pressure from the firing cartridge, directing it through a small port in the barrel at the front of the chamber to retard and delay the rearward movement of the slide. It blows or expels part of the expanding ignition gas into the cylinder using a piston mounted on a slide. So, the slide finishes its journey to the rear, opens the breech and ejects the spent cartridge case. It seems to help make it a light shooting gun with a lighter coil. Stripping the new CCP M2 does not require a pry tool, but at first, for non-engineers, it is difficult to get the piston into the port. Now piece of cake, but wife won't let me touch any mechanical housework. To open, push the small notched locking block located behind the frame and pull it to the right. Doing so releases the locking block and firing pin cover. Then turn the slide back slightly to release the extractor and pull the back of the slide to remove it. Bada Bing, Bada Boom!

I have other criteria and in-depth considerations in my book, but space prevents addressing them here. So here's a quick overview of me and this collection of guns with just a few of my top considerations to get you started.

Here are my 10 criteria for evaluating the Walther CCP M2 pistol and I will use it for concealed carry shooting. In addition to my criteria, there are other subjective features that may be interesting to some people, for example:

So, I put this together in my last "misc" benchmark. I set a possible score of ten for each of my ten criteria to get a possible score of 100. You can certainly add or subtract additional criteria and priorities.

After shooting the Walther CCP M2 9mm and carefully considering its specs and features, below are my opinions, points and ratings for each of my 10 criteria. Please note that this is very subjective and personal and I am not a huge expert on shooters. Also, I've only shot about 225 rounds with my CCP M2, so it's not completely broken. I shoot Sig Sauer premium ammunition in Elite Performance 115-grain FMJ, V-Crown 124-grain JHP and .365 115-grain FMJ bullets. Thanks to Sig Sauer for providing this excellent and fine ammo for field testing and pistol evaluation.

The CCP M2 and the grip surface of the 3.54 inch barrel and cross hatch feel very comfortable in my hand. The overall ergonomics are excellent, as I have previously encountered on PPQ M2 rifles. And this CCP M2 is a smooth and accurate shooter for a pistol of this value. The non-slip grip feels like it was meant for my medium-sized hands. The texture on the handle is just right, not too aggressive and not too soft.

My wife tried the gun and also said it felt great in her hand. He likes how minimal the slide feels and how easy it is for him to put it on. The M2 felt vibration was easy for both of us to handle. This reduced motion helps range and has proven reliable and accurate for both of us. Both of us easily got three shots into each of the five target circles of different sizes. Even a 2.5-inch circle was no problem for us at seven yards. The CCP M2 impressed me as a well-made pistol with excellent ergonomics and accuracy for a well-priced pistol.

I used my concealed carry drill from a standing position, drew the CCP M2 and got 15 quick shots on my target in five rounds from seven yards. And I met the time constraint and got 80% of the results (at least 12 out of 15) with three results in each of the five circles within 20 seconds. This old programmer with advanced sights isn't a great picture, so even this budget gun makes me look good. The one-action striker trigger is nice, but it has a long shot. He's not a two-man striker like most strikers these days. I am truly impressed with the inherent accuracy and grip comfort of this excellent rifle. It has a nice smooth and short trigger, even if the trigger is pressed for a long time.

The accuracy of the Walther CCP M2 was excellent for me in self defense at 3, 5, 7 and 10 yards. You can see my results using the concealed carry drill above at 7 yards. However, my groups at 15 and 20 yards were between 3 and 4 inches and not very good. The gun performs very reliably with no misfeeds or failure to eject or lock back on the last round,
