Walther 380 Price - If you mention the words "Walter" and "380" to any gun or spy movie fan, you'll immediately think of James Bond and his famous Walther PPK in .380 ACP. Today we're discussing the Walther PK380, a horse that's a bit different from the classic movie rifle. While it uses the same cartridge and double action/single action (DA/SA) operating system as the Bond PPK, the two pistols have little in common in this Walter PK380 review.
The PPK has a metal frame and uses a conventional recoil action to eject the spent cartridge after firing.

The PK380, on the other hand, has a polymer frame and uses the same delayed recoil lock as the other pistols in this test. While the PPK is known as the compact pistol used by undercover operators on the big screen, the PK380 is actually one of the larger pistols in our testing. It holds eight rounds in a single-stack magazine, and a short Picatinny rail on the front of the frame lets you add a light, laser, or other accessory.

The PK380 felt great in my hands. This is one of the larger rifles in this test (similar to the S&W M&P Shield 380EZ). So I felt like I was holding a compact 9mm instead of a compact .380. Unlike the other guns in this test, the PK380 is a double/single action (DA/SA) gun (more on that later). It has a hand safety mounted on the back of the slide that works similarly to other slide mounted safeties. Simply turn the safety with your thumb while pointing the rifle at the target.
Due to the DA/SA operation, the PK380 has two separate triggers. The first is a double pull, which cuts the chicken and releases the hammer at the same time. The second is a single action that depresses the hammer. This gives the PK380 a light single action trigger that requires just over four pounds of effort to fire the pistol. Double-action pull is still a manageable seven pounds.
The PK380 is a lot of fun to shoot. The pistol's large frame and long target radius, combined with the small, powerful .380 ACP cartridge, facilitate fast and accurate target shots. But the safety of the gun is a little different.
Unlike most safety rifles, the PK380's trigger can be pulled and the hammer drops when the safety is engaged. But the firing pin will not go forward and the gun will not fire as long as the safety is engaged.

According to Walter, this is intended to add an extra layer of protection when you dry the gun at home. The gun, when on safety, behaves the same as when it is ready to fire (except for the loud "pop" and a hole in something). I don't know about you, but I prefer a more traditional safety that disables the trigger and completely disables the gun once it's fired. This tells me the gun is safe and I can react as needed. With the PK380, the only way to tell if a gun is safe is to look at the safety. This is not the case with the PK380 and can cause confusion as to why this gun will not fire when it should.
As I tried to lock the slide back in, another small fly appeared. When I started using the slide lock lever I realized there was no slide lock lever. This was not a problem for me at the range, as my habit was to trigger the gun by pushing the slide, not using the slide lock lever. However, locking the slide for storage or maintenance requires the use of an empty magazine. It takes some getting used to.
The PK380 magazine release is located on the rear of the trigger guard. This is a feature of other guns made in Europe. Although it's a change from the standard frame magazine release, I found it easy to use and didn't slow me down at all.
The long slide radius, light trigger, and large frame helped the PK380 rank among the best groups in our test. The gun was comfortable to shoot; Firing 500 rounds in one session was never difficult.

I had only two problems with the PK380 during the 500-round reliability test. At 278 rounds, the .380 Blazer Brass failed to empty, and at 324 rounds, neither did the Remington Golden Saber.
The PK380 offers high-line accuracy. The size and weight made it easy to place round after round where I wanted. That being said, the unusual safety is a bit off, because you have to be more careful to make sure that the gun is empty and loaded when it is supposed to be loaded. At $399 MSRP, the PK380 is on par with the other pistols in our test. And with a real Picatinny rail on the front, it offers the option of mounting lights and lasers that most rifles in our testing don't offer.
