It was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter.
Initial designs for what would become the Me 262 began in April 1939, before the start of World War II. When the aircraft was on its first service flight on 18 April 1941, it used a piston engine instead of jet propulsion; It was not until July 18, 1942 that the first jet powered aircraft was built. The project was advanced by Luftwaffe Chief Hermann Göring and Adolf Hitler through genetics, metallurgy, and intervention at the highest levels. He advocated for the Me 262 to serve as a ground attack/bomber rather than a defensive fighter, which required a redesign.
